Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. Her father, a carnival barker, passed away when she was a small little girl. This forced her mother to support the family by working as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. She left the school only after two years in order to pursue an acting career. She faced many obstacles on the path she chose to pursue. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos in a crime magazine however, no theatre opportunities were offered. Then in NYC, she worked in a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting and moving back to Boston. She made enough money by working as an usher in the morning, while at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She earned a bachelor's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
